Arkansas Football Player Dies In Hospital :
Team of the Arkansas football was in mourning Sunday after the death of Garrett Uekman backup winger.The university said Uekman was pronounced dead at Washington Regional Medical Center in Fayetteville on Sunday.
The cause of death was not immediately known, but the university said Uekman was found unconscious and unresponsive in his dorm room on campus around 11:15 on Sunday. He was last seen playing video games with a roommate about an hour earlier.
When the emergency services personnel arrived, Uekman had cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead at 12:10"Garrett Uekman was a dedicated member of our family and we are all sorry for his passing," Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino said in a statement.
His loss is a terrible shock, and it makes you realize how precious life is.University Police Lt. Matthew Mills said he was not suspicious circumstances around the death of Uekman, and his body was sent to the state medical examiner for autopsy.
Petrino spoke briefly on Sunday night, fighting tears as he read the statement. He noted that the last game Uekman, Arkansas '44-17 victory on Saturday, Mississippi State was in Little Rock War Memorial Stadium - where he played high school matches, while the Little Rock Catholic.
Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long also spoke and said the university was not aware of any pre-existing condition Uekman. He said the Razorback players "expressed" shock and dismay "on hearing of the death Uekman an afternoon team meeting.
Lang also said that the school will hold a candle to watch Monday night in honor of Uekman and said that his family had hoped that the No. 3 Razorbacks to play Friday's game at No. 1 LSU as planned.
"Of course, the Garrett family feelings (are) football and the University of Arkansas Razorback and were important to him," said Long. "And we continue to fulfill."
Uekman 19 years last season and redshirt the Razorbacks played in nine games this season. He majored in physical education applied.
Uekman parents, Danny and Michelle, sent a press release from the university.
"Our son has lived a dream to go to the U and playing football for the Razorbacks," a statement. "He loved his school, his coaches, teammates and friends, and had influence and inspire people. We ask for your love and prayers for Garrett, our family and friends, as we all cope with this heavy loss and painful .
David Estes, football coach at Little Rock Catholic High School, where he played Uekman, said he has informed the Arkansas running backs coach Tim Horton Uekman found his roommate in his dorm on campus. Estes said he had seen him play Uekman and was "beaming from ear to ear" Saturday night at War Memorial Stadium, as the coup Razorbacks Mississippi.
