Two Runners Die During Philadelphia Marathon :
Philadelphia (CNN) - Two runners have died while participating in Sunday Philadelphia Marathon, the race director said.
Melanie Johnson, CEO of Marathon Weekend in Philadelphia, said in a statement that the race organizers "deeply saddened" by death.
Two runners identities were not immediately disclosed, because the officers were still working to inform their families, according to Johnson. This information is provided to the public "when it's available," he added.
"Our thoughts are runners, families and friends," Johnson said.
Marathons around Philadelphia, with much of the line established along the Schuylkill River. Runners pass by historic sites, including the Betsy Ross House and the Liberty Bell, in and out of Fairmount Park, and in all districts, including Manayunk and University City.
Unlike some other marathons, the Philadelphia Marathon "is open to all competitors" because participants do not have a qualifying time to enter, according to the career site. However, officially, everyone must register in advance to participate.
Cool temperatures, light winds and cloudy skies were the rule during the race, which began at 7 am
"It was perfect weather, ideal for any rider. Hopefully if there were more high humidity and warm conditions," said driver Jamie CNN affiliate WPIV Dimeglio, expressing shock of the death of two runners.
Folisho Tuko resident High Falls, New York, which is the origin of Ethiopia, won the race on Sunday of the men of the time 2 hours, 19 minutes, 14 seconds. Women's title went to Mariska Kramer, a Dutch woman running time 2 hours, 35 minutes, 46 seconds to win the second in a row.
