Take a hen, items it fat,
Some of this and some of that.
Get some turnips, eliminate them well.

Now celery, big and white-colored,

Cranberries, so nasty and unique,
With the hen we must eat.

George Washington, first president of the United States, proclaimed the first national Thanksgiving in 1789.
